The best can age forever and be the most remarkable wine on earth. Poor to Average Pinot is almost undrinkable.
Pinot Noir is the most cursed, tricky, fickle grape in a vineyard. Those who dare grow Pinot Noir and aim to do it well are incredibly anal to the point of obsession, fretting over every aspect of the vineyard in the slim hope that one day, the planets will align, the gods will bless, and the mythical Pinot Noir that stories are made of will be born.
Burgundies are made of pure Pinot Noir, and Grand Cru vineyards can produce wines that last forever. Other famed places for Pinot are New Zealand, Oregon... and that's about it. Australia, and California are too hot for Pinot which results in a strawberry jam flavored wine, while Chile and South Africa are starting to come to terms with the grape but aren't quite there yet. When searching for a good pinot, look to cooler climates, higher prices, and if it's a reputable producer, try a few vintages. Even in the best plots of land, poor Pinot can result. But keep searching, the best Pinot Noir easily trumps every other wine produced and is well worth the long hunt.
