Body: Light to Medium Bodied
Taste: Dark Fruit, berry, strawberry, chocolate
Tends to be heavily oaked, adding vanilla, caramel notes
Also known as Tempranilla, Tinto Fino, Tinto de Toro, Ull de Llebre
At home in Spain and across the Iberian peninsula, Tempranillo comes into it's own in the Ribera del Duero and Toro regions of Spain. Strong in fruit, but with a mild body, this varietal is typically blended with Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon to round out it's body and fruit flavors. Many Spanish wineries have found that Tempranillo goes very well with oak barrel aging, giving a distinctively toasted, caramel flavor, but many go too far with this and the strength of the oak overpowers the fruit of the wine. Cult wines from the Ribera del Duero are made packed with fruit and smoke, but be prepared to pay top dollar for these beauties.
